Saturday marked the beginning of National Autism Week. At YMCA Talent Match, we work with young adults between the ages of 18- 29. We support young people to break down the barriers that are preventing them from getting into employment, education and training. We offer tailored support and wide range of opportunities and activities bringing young people closer to their dreams and ambitions.
It was through this work and the voice of the young people themselves, we found a clear gap in the support offered for those with Autism aged 18-29.
An example of the lack of knowledge is young adults who presented a certain type of behaviour were not been understood by employers and therefore were often labelled and not getting passed probation periods. When speaking to the general public about our initiative, parents often fear the life there child will lead once they reach 18, Autism this needs to change!
We now have a solid plan to create a purpose built space with that needed specialised support for those young adults.
It will be a place of relaxation, rest bite, knowledge for the community and also a space where employers and training providers can come and meet the young adults where there at.
The space will be called ‘Spectrum’
